Required Assessments
Fetal Heart Rate Monitoring:
- Assess for signs of fetal distress such as late decelerations.
Maternal Vital Signs:
- Monitor blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and respiratory rate.
Contraction Monitoring:
- Assess the frequency, duration, and intensity of contractions.
Cervical Checks:
- Dilation, effacement, and position of baby.
Amniotic Fluid Characteristics:
- Assess for clear versus meconium-stained fluid, indicating potential complications.
Nursing Interventions
Positioning: Encourage frequent position changes to alleviate pain, aid fetal descent, and improve circulation.
Pain Management
Pharmacologic: epidural anesthesia, local anesthesia, entonox, morphine, fentanyl .
Non-pharmacologic: breathing techniques, massage, counterpressure.
Emotional Support: Provide constant reassurance, help with relaxation techniques, and maintain a calm environment.
Support During Pushing: Guide the patient to push effectively when the cervix is fully dilated, using directed or spontaneous pushing techniques.
