The voyageurs were men from New France who travelled between the fur merchants of Montreal and the fur trade posts of the Great Lakes, and eventually further west.

Strolling through Quebec, Montreal, and Trois- Rivieres, you’d see the many shops of merchants such as blacksmiths, shoemakers, masons, bakers and butchers.

Habitants
In France they would have been called paysans (peasants) because they rarely owned anything, often being owned by seigneurs.
In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land, plant crops and build a house.
Habitants were farmers who lived on large plots of land owned by landlords or seigneurs who received the land as grants from the king of France.
Seigneurs
Seigneurs had to build a house for themselves, and a flour mill and a church for the habitants.
Most seigneurs were men from noble families, but women and commoners could also become seigneurs.
