Farmers
Habitants
Paysans rarely owned anything, often their seigneurs often owned them
In France, habitants would have been called paysans which means peasants
In exchange for the right to establish a farm, habitants had to clear the land, plant crops, and build houses. They also had to pay their seigneurs miller to grind their grain into flour and give a few days of labour each year to the seigneur
Seigneurs
Most seigneurs were men from noble families, but women and commoners could also become seigneurs
Seigneurs had to recruit settlers (habitants) to farm it, as well as they had to build homes for themselves and flourmill and churches for the habitants
