Farmers: The seigneurs collected rent from the habitants, either in the form of money, crops, or a share of the produce, in exchange for allowing them to farm the land. In addition to overseeing the land, seigneurs were responsible for maintaining roads, churches, and mills on their properties, and they played a role in settling disputes among the habitants. In New France, the seigneurs were landowners who received large plots of land from the French crown, which they divided into smaller parcels to lease to the habitants (farmers).
