Monarch butterfly has four stages in life cycle
Egg
Female monarch butterfly lays egg on leaf
Caterpillar grows inside tiny egg
Egg hatches in three twelve days
Caterpillar
Hungry caterpillar eats all time
Caterpiller eats own eggshell and leaf
Grow quickly and skin not grow
Skin plit and peels
New skin under old skin
Shed skin four to six times and grows four two to four weeks
Pupa
Is grown
Is grown and hangs from branch
Sheds and skin one last time
New skin is bright green
Green skin hard and caterpillar is now a pupa
Stay inside and shell one or two weeks
Adult butterfly
Pupa come out of shell
Wings are wet
New butterfly rests and must hang upside down and not be able to fly
Hang for three to four hours sun and dry to wings
Is able to fly and eat
Search for mate
Live for two to six weeks
Female monarch lays her eggs and life cycle start again
