ISSUES IN PSYCHOLOGY
GENDER BIAS
Alpha Bias
Theories exaggerate differences between men and women and assume they're distinctively different from one another
-
Example: Bowlby suggested that the primary caregiver is the mother, suggesting that the mother is more important than the father
A03 - Acknowledge men and women do behave differnently so is beneficial in the fields of mental health etc
A03 - Banderas's Bobo doll study supported that boys reacted in an aggressive way but girls in a verbal

CULTURAL BIAS
Ethnocentrism
-
EG. Ainsworth created attachment types that were based on Western (American) cultural norms of how parents and infants behave and what is classed as an ideal attachment type - ignoring other cultures may have different styles of attachment
IMPACT
- Can cause discrimination and prejudice towards other cultures
- Misdiagnosis of mental health disorders due to them being based on Western ideals of behaviour
- Mistreatment of mental health disorders as they are based on treatments designed for Western cultures
AVOIDING
- ensure that conclusions drawn from research is culturally specific in research conclusions
- Acknowledging in conclusions that cultures may differ
- Taking a culturally relative approach
-
- a way to be culturally relative is to immerse yourself in the culture you are studying before taking out an experiment
- Ensuring that research questions arent biased towards your own culture
- making samples representative of all cultures
A03
- Fails to consider - not all behaviour is impacted by culture, for example genetics, don't have to include cultures all the time
- Universal - It can cause stereotyping and discrimination of other cultures as we will use our culture as the baseline to compare
- Real life application - It is not practical to take a culturally relative approach as it is difficult to find native psychologists in all cultures also limits our understanding of other cultures
- Research - demonstrates ethnocentrism and the negative impact eg. Van Ljzendoorn
