If a costume designer was to redesign the costumes from Into the Woods, what changes would they make?
Colour
Rapunzel is purple. Again, was this in the original fairytale or was it decided on when the Disney movie came out? Need to look into this
-
Why is Cinderella’s dress blue? Need to read the original fairytale but I don’t think it actually says anything about the colour of it, so was it Disney that made it blue?

NYMT Into the Woods
-
The 80s was a time of fashion change. Everything was much more flamboyant, and there were new ideas about fashion.

Changes in society
-
-
-
There are now different societal pressures. Some people don't want to be characterised as ‘the girly girl’
-
-
Sustainability
-
Particularly fast fashion affects the environment, and is often made in unmoral conditions/situations
People want to feel good about what they wear, in terms of looks but also in terms of how it affects the world around them.
Theatres may decide to do costumes differently to meet sustainability standards. Many have a sustainability plan.
Successful designs
Need to understand all the requirements of the character by reading the play and highlighting each necessary element to make the character come alive
Shape, colour, style and from for each era of clothing
Sketching/painting what each costume would look like on the actor’s body and how it would move on the character
Also need to take in comfort for the actor, how well they can move and speak/sing, and how the costume will appear under the lights
Follies
-
-
Why is each character there, how do they want to be seen, what is at stake, how will it affect their sense of self
