N. meningitidis concentrates in the naropharynx: transmitted through secretion or aerosol contamination
-
The host immune system detects the pathogens and stimulates the release of cell wall fragments from bacteria and Lipopolysaccharides
These substances trigger a strong inflammatory response in the subarachnoid space and the pia matter
Inflammatory response leads to an accumulation ot immune cells and debris in the CSFInflammation of meningial tissue causes:
- subarachnoid space swelling
- Increased intracranial pressure due to cranial vaults limited capacity for expansion

-
DEFINITION
-
Causative organisms
- Streptococcus pneumoniae
- Neisseria meningitides

ASEPTIC: caused by virus or secondary to lymphoma, leukemia or HIV
