19km long from north to south, 4km from east to west
Has previously been used for hunting & timber resources but only for recreation now
Complex food web composed of thousands of species:
Native tree species: beech, elm, oak & ash
Shrub layer: hazel, holly, brambles, flowering plants
177 species of lichen & moss
many primary consumers: 38 species of birds
secondary consumers: adders, foxes, owls
700 species of fungi, important decomposers which are common due to large amount of deadwood
100 lakes & ponds provide essential habits for fauna & flora
Sustainable management of Epping Forest:
Recreation is controlled
Designated car parking
Visitor centre
Provision of rubbish bins & leaflets
Paths for walking & riding
Vegetation is cut back along the road
Deer are aware of traffic & reduce the risk of motor vehicle collisions
These strategies are sustainable as they protect the forest for future generations & it helps protect current & future deer populations
Cattle have been reintroduced in some areas as grazing supports the growth of flora
