A Bloody Stalemate
War in the Trenches
Why was the first battle of Marne so significant?
It meant the ruin of the Schlieffen Plan and the end to a quick victory for Germany
Armies traded huge losses of human life for pitifully small land gains
Life in the trenches was misearable, no fresh food or sleep
Space between the opposing trenches was No Mans Land
Crossing no mans land would lead to machine gun fire
Battle of the Somme lead to more than half a million casualties
Western Front was called the terrain of death
The Conflict Grinds Along
Why did Germany attack France First?
Based on a strategy (the Schlieffen Plan) to quickly defeat France, then focus on Russia
Schlieffen Plan was named after Alfred von Schlieffen
Attack France quickly than rush to the East and fight Russia. Germans thought they could do this because Russia lagged behind on railroad systems (longer to supply the front lines)
Germans needed speed to achive this plan
Germans thought they would win
After an the Germans reached the outskirts of Paris the Allies regrouped and attacked the Germans (northeat of Paris). After 4 days of fighting the Germans retreated
First major clash on Western Front. The Battle of the Marne was perhaps single more importamt event in the war
A quick vicotry no longer seemes possible
Technological Innovations
a more distructive way of warfare
poison gas made it easier for themt o win wars quicker
machine guns made it extremely difficult for infantry to advance across open ground, contributing to the stalemate of trench warfare
in response to the chemical gas being used by germany other countries developed chemical weapons of there own
airplanes made it possible for war in the skies
overall lead to omore casualties in the front
