Sustainable Development of Housing
How does Housing affect the Natural Environment?
Use of natural Resources
In order to make space for the building of homes, land needs to be cleared, resulting in the depletion of forests
Deforestation – When trees are cut down for wood, paper, or to clear land for farming, it destroys animal habitats and reduces the Earth's ability to absorb carbon dioxide. This leads to climate change.
Water Pollution – Factories and farms may dump waste into rivers and lakes, contaminating water sources and harming aquatic life.
Air Pollution – Burning fossil fuels (like coal and oil) releases harmful gases into the air, causing air pollution and global warming.
Soil Degradation – Overusing land for farming or mining removes nutrients from the soil, making it less fertile for future crops.
Loss of Biodiversity – Destroying forests, rivers, and oceans can make it difficult for plants and animals to survive, leading to extinction.
Climate Change – Excessive use of fossil fuels releases greenhouse gases, trapping heat in the Earth's atmosphere and causing global temperatures to rise
Environmental Pollution
Definition: Pollution can be the introduction of substances that do not normally belong in the environment, which, in great concentrations, can have harmful effects on plants, animals and humans
Water pollution
Wastewater from homes and improper waste disposal can contaminate rivers and reservoirs, affecting water quality.
Air pollution
Construction and vehicle emissions from housing areas release harmful gases, contributing to air pollution and global warming.
Land Pollution
Housing construction and daily waste generation increase landfill waste and contribute to environmental degradation.
How does access to housing affect people?
Provision of basic needs
Housing provides people with shelter, security, and a safe place to live, protecting them from harsh weather and dangers.
Presence of amenities
Access to housing near schools, hospitals, shops, and transport services improves convenience and quality of life.
Presence of communities
Living in a housing area allows people to form social connections, build relationships, and receive support from neighbors.
How can housing be sustainably managed
Integrated land-usage planning
Provision of inclusive public housing
Environmental Features in buildings
Improvements to the conditions of slums
