Cause of the Beast from the East
A meterorological event called stratospheric warming distributed the jet stream
Allowing cold winds from Russia to travel as far as the UK
Primary impacts:
10 people died
Up to 50cms of snow fell on high ground
Rural areas experienced temperature's lows of up to -12°C
Secondary impacts:
100s of schools were forced to close
125 in North Yorkshire
Hospital operations were cancelled
BA cancelled hundreds of short-haul flights from Heathrow
Hundreds of motorists on the M80 near Glasgow were stuck for up to 13 hours
Some spent the night in their cars & others abandoned their vehicles
1,000 vehicles were at a standstill for 8 miles in both directions
Food shortage in some supermarkets
Drifting of snow led to isolation of several villages
Response:
Red weather warnings issued prompting Devon & Cornwall police to declare a major incident
3rd red warning in 7 years
Environment Agency issued flood warnings for parts of Cornwall's south coast
Residents were told to expect tides to be 40cm
10 RAF vehicles & crews transported doctors & stranded patients after local police admitted they struggled to cope
In Edinburgh, soldiers were deployed to help transport 200 NHS clinical & support staff to & from the Western General Hospital & Edinburgh Royal Infirmary
