Nervous system
The nervous system is the body's communication network, transmitting signals between the brain, spinal cord, and the rest of the body.
Main parts
-
Brain: Processes information, controls thoughts, emotions, and body functions.
-
Functions
Sensory Input: Detects changes in the environment (touch, sound, vision, etc)
Cognitive Functions: Enables thinking, learning, and memory.
-
Dissorders
Alzheimer’s Disease: Progressive memory loss and cognitive decline.
Parkinson’s Disease: Affects movement due to lack of dopamine
-
Digestive System
The digestive system breaks down food into nutrients, absorbs them into the bloodstream, and eliminates waste.
-
-
Common dissorders
Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS): Abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, or constipation.
-
-
-
The small intestine is the primary site of nutrient absorption. Around 90% of digestion and nutrient absorption occurs in the small intestine, not the stomach.
Urinary System
The urinary system eliminates waste, regulates fluids, and maintains homeostasis.
Main organs
-
-
-
Kidneys: Filter blood, remove waste, balance electrolytes, and produce hormones.
Functions
-
Water & Electrolyte Balance Regulates sodium, potassium, and calcium.
Waste Removal: Excretes urea, creatinine, and toxins.
Blood Pressure Control: Produces renin, which helps regulate pressure.
Red Blood Cell Production: Releases erythropoietin, stimulating bone marrow.
Disorders
Urinary Tract Infection (UTI): Burning sensation, frequent urination, cloudy urine.
-
Kidney Stones: Sharp pain, nausea, difficulty urinating.
-
The kidneys are vital for blood filtration. Without kidney function, toxins would build up in the blood, leading to death within days. Dialysis is a life-saving treatment that artificially filters the blood.
Respiratory system
The respiratory system allows the body to take in oxygen and remove carbon dioxide through breathing.
Main organs
-
-
-
Nose & Nasal Cavity: Filters, warms, and moistens incoming air.
-
Circulatory system
The circulatory system transports oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and waste throughout the body via blood.
Main organs
-
-
-
-
Blood: Carries oxygen, nutrients, and waste.
-
-
-
-
-
Dissorders
-
-
Atherosclerosis: Buildup of plaque in arteries, reducing blood flow.
