A man on Calloo Street saves light bulbs by keeping his house dark.
At the Can Café, people discuss philosophical questions like whether an Invisible Being watches over them.
Lina’s Love for Running
Lina enjoys discovering new things and loves running through the city.
She feels strong and big-hearted, despite the city’s problems.
She wishes she could bring good news to everyone she meets.
The Odd Man and the Message for the Mayor
A strange man approaches Lina and gives her a message for the mayor: “Delivery at eight. From Looper.”
The man is odd-looking, with a long neck and large teeth, and he hands her twenty cents for the delivery.
Arrival at the Gathering Hall
Lina runs to the Gathering Hall, where the mayor’s office is located.
While waiting, Lina reads The Book of the City of Ember and learns about the city's history and the job of the timekeeper.
A guard, Barton Snode, takes Lina to the waiting room but says the mayor is busy.
Exploration of the Building
Lina, getting curious, explores the Gathering Hall and climbs to the roof.
From the roof, she sees the entire city of Ember, but beyond it is only darkness.
A crowd gathers below to see her, causing a commotion.
The Chief Guard’s Reaction
Redge Stabmark, the chief guard, runs up to the roof and pulls Lina down.
He scolds her for causing trouble and brings her to the mayor.
The Mayor’s Decision
The mayor, Mayor Cole, recognizes Lina from Assignment Day and is angry at her actions.
He threatens to put her in the Prison Room, but Lina explains that she was just delivering a message.
Lina whispers the message to the mayor: “Delivery at eight. From Looper.”
