Spain builds an American empire
Christopher Columbus
Christopher Columbus was the captain of the Santa Maria, the Niña, and the Pinta. He sailed from Spain to the Americas in 1492 looking for an alternative trade route to Asia arriving to an island in the Bahamas in the Caribbean Sea on October 12 of 1492.
Colony
The Spanish explores intended to transform the islands of the Caribbean into colonies, or lands that are controlled by another nation. Overtime other European explorers began sailing across the ocean in search of new lands to claim.
Hernando Cortes
Hernando Cortes was a Spaniard who landed on the shores of Mexico in 1519, looking to claim new lands for Spain. After colonizing several Caribbean islands, the Spanish turned their attention to the American mainland.
Francisco Pizarro
In 1532 Francisco Pizarro marched a small force into South America conquering the Incan Empire.
Conquistador
Conquistadores are the people that found new land and took over it to claim the land for Spain. The Spanish explorers were lured by rumors of vast lands filled with gold and silver, conquistadors carved out colonies in the regions that would become Mexico, South America and the United States.
Atahualpa
Atahualpa was the Incan ruler of the near city of Cajamarca. He commanded a force of about 30,000. He was kidnapped by the Spaniards and he offered to fill a room once with gold and twice with silver in exchange for his release. He was later killed after the Spaniards received the randsom.
Mestizo
Mestizo is a mix of Native American and Spanish which was common so that the population increased.

Santa Maria, the Niña, and the Pinta were the three boats that Christopher Columbus took sail on for the Americas, leading to the discovery of new land.
