Anaerobes
Oxygen

-
Anaerobic bacteria have no detoxifying pathway to deal with toxic products of oxygen metabolism e.g. H2O2
Aerobic/facultative bacteria have enzymes (e.g. catalase) which can detoxify byproducts of oxygen metabolism
-
Incubation
GasPak System: anaerobic sachets can be placed in jars or pouches to create an anaerobic environment for aerotolerant anaerobes
Anaerobic chambers: Closed system with gas supply and airlock for complete oxygen absence. Required for obligate anaerobes.
-
Gram positive anaerobes
bacilli
Spore forming
Clostridium perfingens
Exotoxins: a-toxin, haemolysin
-
Infections: Gas gangrene, food-borne infections (type A), Clostridial endometritis
