causes of aridity - Coggle Diagram
causes of aridity
relief
air descending from mountainous areas warms and dries by compression. little rainfall forms and aridity is the result
central areas of continents are dry because air moving over land mass does not absorb large amounts of water vapour
during the ice age, conversion of water to ice resulted in larger continental areas, this is thought to have facilitated the spread of deserts during the ice age

cold ocean currents
wind moving over a cold body of water is cooled, this causes an increase in the himidity and moisture is condensed to form mist and fog. the fog moves inland adn so the cold air cannot hold as much water.
-
continentality
many deserts are in the middle of continents and sooff shore wind cannot take water far enough to reach it
-
prevailing winds
winds from the continents to the coast carry dry air and so any moisture in teh desert gets taken into teh air intensifying the dryness.
