"his affections, like ivy, were the growth of time", shows it takes time for him to build relationships and once hes built them hes very loyal.
he is described as the "last good influence in the lives of down going men" hes a friend to even the most troubled people.
He threatens hyde to protect jekyll, "make such a scandal out of this"
utterson Takes huge concern to Jekyll's will, "if he be mr hyde", "i shall be mr seek", shows he is investigating in order to protect jekyll.
The letter
Utterson has to decide to open the letter or not, wondering if its "would cost me another" , he wants to protect jekyll's reputation and savour their friendship.
After reading jekyll's confession , he says "we may at least save his credit ", this proves utterson's true value of friendship even after jekyll's passing.
