Representation
Magazines
Heat
Men are represented in a negative way. "Liam's double life with Cheryl". They are represented as being the bad guys in relationships with the women being the victim/innocent who are affected by them and their actions
Relationships are represented as negative through "Is this Harry and Meghan's biggest mistake" and "Liam's double life with Cheryl" which both show negatives in a relationship.
Women are presented as positive and the victims in the situation whilst also being presented as negative. "Queen of the castle" represents Giovanna in a very positive way. They are complimenting her and what she did in the jungle. "Posh Caught Out!" presents posh in a possibly negative way, making her seem like she is hiding something from the audience.
Royalty is presented negatively through "Is this Harry and Meghan's biggest mistake Yet" implying they have done bad things in the past, making people view them badly.
Tatler
Women are presented in a very positive way, almost as if they are empowering. Emma Weymouth is posing very elegantly but still looks powerful through her direct eye contact with the audience.
In comparison to Heat, Tatler represents royalty in a more positive way "Marchioness of Bath". The magazine is centred around royalty and Emma Weymouth the new Marchioness is the main image in a styled shoot where she looks very elegant and graceful.
Relationships are presented positively through the sell line "Love in the time of corona" showing that even during hard times they talk about relationships.
Television
Doctor Who
Doctor who was made in the 1960s when there were still strict gender stereotypes, so men in Doctor Who are presented as stronger and more dominant. They are seen as smarter and the ones who take charge in the situation
Women are seen as less competent and have to be submissive to the men they are around. They do not have a say in the situations and just have to follow along. This is seen by barbara who goes to her male colleague to ask for help
Older generation are seen as more controlling and knowledgeable, they are the ones who get to make decisions and they control what the younger people do. The older generations were more respected.
Younger generation are seen as less competent and were meant to be seen and not heard. This is seen through Susan who is told off by The doctor for trying to have a say. They are less respected because they are younger and considered to not know enough
His Dark Materials
Women are seen as stronger and more determined. Mrs Coulter wants to have power over the Magisterium so tries to manipulate the men. Lyra goes off on her own and at first doesn't want/need Will. Women are seen as positive and strong which breaks some gender stereotypes as seen in Doctor Who
Men are seen as weaker and less needed, the female characters are able to do what they want on their own. Men in HDM are seen as less dominant and easily manipulated by characters like Mrs Coulter
The older generations whilst being powerful and strong are seen as weaker and more foolish. They can be seen as ignorant and greedy wanting power for bad. Mrs Coulter is unable to control her anger and only acts for herself.
The younger generations are seen as better and are more likeable characters. Their aim is to do things that are for the good and not take power. They are considered wiser and more mature with their actions. They are able to control their emotions better. This is the opposite to Doctor Who as Lyra is seen as more knowledgeable.
