The First Encounters, in October 12, 1492, Christopher Columbus and his crew, first saw a sight of shoreline and land, this was his first encounter with "los indios".
In 1493 , Christopher and his crew returned to Spain.
In 1500, Pedro Alaveres Cabral reached Brazil and clamined the land his country, a year later Amerigo Vespicci, also traveled along the eastern coast.
When Amerigo returned he clamied that the land Colombus found was indeed not apart of Asia, but a new world.
In 1507, a German mapmaker named the continent "America" in honor of Amerigo.
In 1519, Ferdinand Magellan led the boldest exloration yet, several years earlier, Vasco Nunez marched through Panama, and became the first European to see the Paciific Ocean.
In 1522,Magellan crew, became the first crew to circumnavigate, or sail around the world.

In 1500, Cabral claimed the land of Brazil for Portugal.
In 1513, spanish explorer Juan Ponce landed on the coast of Florida and clamied it for Spain.
The Spanish government abolished the encomienda system in 1542.
