4 Principles of a Universal Design for Learning Approach
Start small
Teachers should commit to high expectations and believe in students' potential every day

First Principle
All students can reach high expectations
Encourage students to track and monitor their own progress (e.g., digital Data Notebooks
Frequent one-on-one check-ins help students stay committed to their goals
Setting firm goals for all students shows that we believe in their capability
Second Principle
Barriers to success exist in the system, not in the students
Address barriers proactively, such as building background knowledge or ensuring cultural relevance
Provide clearer directions, checklists, and structured support to help students navigate learning
Identify potential barriers in curriculum, teaching methods, resources, and assessments
Fourth Principle
Continual self-reflection leads to lifelong, expert learners
Build a safe learning environment where students feel valued
Encourage growth mindset through revision opportunities rather than focusing solely on final grades
The goal of UDL is to develop “expert learners” who are motivated, resourceful, and strategic
Use reflection questions and exit tickets to help students evaluate their choices and learning process
Third Principle
Learner variability is the norm, so a one-size-fits-all approach doesn’t work
Empower students with choices to help them overcome barriers
Apply three UDL principles
Multiple means of representation: Various ways for students to acquire knowledge (reading, watching, listening)
Multiple means of action and expression: Allow different ways to demonstrate learning (e.g., essays, presentations, videos)
Multiple means of engagement: Different ways to motivate and involve students
Provide scaffolds and autonomy while ensuring all students meet learning goals
