Salem Boytos Per.5 Reproductive System
Major Functions of the Reproductive System (Male & Female)
Female: Produces eggs (ova), supports fertilization, and nurtures fetal development
Male: Produces, stores, and delivers sperm for fertilization
Anatomy of Male Reproductive Structures
Vas Deferens: Transports sperm from testes to urethra
Seminal Vesicles & Prostate Gland: Produce seminal fluid to nourish and transport sperm
Epididymis: Stores and matures sperm
Penis & Urethra: Deliver sperm to the female reproductive tract
Testes: Produce sperm and testosterone
Disorders Associated with the Reproductive System (Including STIs)
Female Disorders: Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), endometriosis, cervical cancer
STIs (Sexually Transmitted Infections)
Bacterial: Chlamydia, gonorrhea, syphilis (treatable with antibiotics)
Viral: HPV, herpes, HIV/AIDS (manageable but not curable)
Male Disorders: Erectile dysfunction, testicular cancer, prostate enlargement
Methods & Classification of Contraceptives
Intrauterine Devices (IUDs): Copper (prevents sperm movement) & hormonal (thins uterine lining)
Permanent Methods: Vasectomy (male) & tubal ligation (female)
Hormonal Methods: Birth control pills, patches, injections (prevent ovulation)
Natural Methods: Tracking ovulation, withdrawal method
Barrier Methods: Condoms, diaphragms (physically block sperm)
Hormones of the Reproductive System (Male & Female)
Male:
Testosterone: Regulates sperm production and male secondary sex characteristics
Female:
Progesterone: Prepares the uterus for pregnancy
LH (Luteinizing Hormone) & FSH (Follicle-Stimulating Hormone): Control ovulation and egg maturation
Estrogen: Develops female secondary sex characteristics and regulates the menstrual cycle
Anatomy of Female Reproductive Structures
Uterus: Supports fetal development
Cervix: Opening to the uterus, expands during childbirth
Fallopian Tubes: Site of fertilization; transport egg to uterus
Vagina: Birth canal and passageway for sperm
Ovaries: Produce eggs (ova) and hormones (estrogen & progesterone)
Events of the Female Hormonal Cycles
Follicular Phase: FSH stimulates follicle growth; estrogen levels rise
Ovulation: LH surge causes egg release
Menstrual Phase: Shedding of the uterine lining
Luteal Phase: Corpus luteum forms, producing progesterone to maintain uterine lining
