Great Britain was selling opium to China but China suddenly made opium illegal. So GB was vera disappointed because it was one their largest marketplace. That’s why tension raised between this two nations and when China refused to give provisions to the british navy. That was the starting point of the 1st war.
The United Kingdom wants to self opium in China but the emperor wants prohibit because of addiction.

Treaty of Nankin (1842) : China had to give Hong Kong to Great Britain, and open more port for international market
Treaty of tianjin (1858) : China had to open more port and make territorial concessions to occidental forces
The opium started a social and economic crisis. Because of the wars the Qing empire began to decline and China has becoming to be colonized by Occidentals.
