League of Nations.
Memberships of the League.
USA didn't join the league due to its policy of isolation, which was a policy that avoided political/economic entaglements with other countries.
Sanctions:
Economic: Difficult to enforce without USA as they could continue supplying aggressor countries with weapons & goods even if sanctions were imposed.
Military: US had one of the most powerful militaries. With US not joining the League, it was made difficult to take strong action on aggressor countries.
USSR wasn't a member, as it was a communist state.
Germany wasn't allowed to join due to its involvement in WW1.
The aims of the League of Nations.
Resolving international disputes without going to war.
Acting as a world government & police force.
Major countries to join the league, and be bound to its covenant to disarm.
Members of the league having collective security.
Members that broke the agreement & went to war would have other members impose economic sanctions onto them.
Disputes would be brought to the league, where league's decision would be finalised. League could also take military action against aggressor nations.
Concerns about the League:
Members such as Britain wanted a simpler organisations meant for emergencies.
However, a body like that had already existed; Conference of Ambassadors
Formed in 1920 after WW1, being a successor to the Supereme War Council (Which was a central command based in Versailles, and founded in 1917, that coordinated the strategy of the principal allies of WW1; Britan, France, Italy, US, & Japan.
Not a part of the League, but was made up of leading politicians from the main members of the league, causing it to be very closely & being formed to enforce peace & mediating territorial disputes among European states.
Its Abilities:
Disarmament: Feared by members that they would be unable to protect their territories if disarmed. Heavy reluctance amongst them.
Stopping aggressor countries: Members concerned by the economic sanctions were reluctant to stop trading with aggressors. League lacked its own army, causing them to be unable to take any sort of military action against them.
