1.4 proteins
lesson 2: protein structure
primary structure
the sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain
secondary structure
alpha helix (beta pleated sheets) maintained by hydrogen bonds
tertiary structure
determines the proteins 3D specific shape
maintained by bonds between R groups of amino acids (hydrogen, disulphide and ionic)
quaternary structure
several polypeptides maintained by hydrogen ionic and disulphide bonds between polypeptides
fibrous proteins e.g collagen
primary structure- unbranched polypeptide chain
secondary structure- polypeptide chain is wound tightly, lots of the amino acid glycine helps packing
tertiary structure- chain twisted into a secondary structure
quaternary structure- made of 3 polypeptides
what affects the structure of a protein
lesson 1: amino acids
all amino acids have
a central carbon group
an amine group
a carboxyl group
an R group/ variable group
dipeptide formation
amino acid + amino acid --> dipeptide + water
condensation reaction between amine group of one amino acid and carboxyl group of another
peptide bonds are formed
lesson 3: enzyme action
