Coastal Management Strategy at Lyme Regis - Coggle Diagram
Coastal Management Strategy at Lyme Regis
£22 million was spent on extensive improvements to the seafront from 2005-2007
Construction of seawalls & promenades
Creation of a wide sand & shingle beach designed to absorb wave energy
Extension of rock armour to protect the harbour wall & to the eatern end of the seafront to absorb wave energy & retain the new beach
Construction of defences to protect the coast to the east of the town from 2013-2015
Building a 390m sea wall infront of the existing wal
480 homes were protected as cliffs were stabilised by nailing, piling & improving drainage
Nails, up to 19 metres long have been installed into the cliffs
Once installed, the nails were covered with a 60 to 120-year design life mesh
Positive impacts:
Improvement in the attractiveness of the seafront & beach due to nourishment & the wide promenade. This has led to increased visitor numbers & seafront businesses are thriving
New defences have withstood recent stormy winters
Harbour is better protected - benefiting the fishing industry & boat owners
Negative impacts:
Visitor numbers have increased
Increased traffic congestion & litter due to increased tourism
Defences have spoilt the natural coastal landscape
Stabilising cliffs that prevent landslides will reduce number of fossils found
Reasons:
Town has been constructed on unstable cliffs
Some of highest erosion rates in Europe due to high energy waves from the southwest & its geology
Mixture of limestone (resistant to erosion) & clay (vulnerable to erosion)
Tourist numbers were down due to the lack of beaches caused by erosion
