Dylan Tan - Identity Mindmap
Character
Strengths
Creativity
"The use of imagination or original ideas to create something"
To be innovative, creativity is a key part in coming up with an idea that is your own
Without it, the world would simply be mirrors of the same thing over and over again
Leadership
"The act of leading a group of people or an organisation"
Provides direction, motivation and inspires achievement of shared goals within a group.
Needed for almost every career; organising the different processes of a company; planning the construction; creation of something or guiding a group of people through a challenge
Love
"A great interest or pleasure in something"
Need to love what I am doing in order to achieve my full potential and success
"Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work" - Steve Jobs
Teamwork
"The combined action of a group, especially when effective or efficient"
Teamwork is needed combined with leadership to ensure everybody has an equal voice and the product is a result of everybody's contributions
I've learnt that there is a balance between effective leadership and teamwork; around 25/75 as there needs to be structure to the group to effectively work but also freedom for each person for their own freedom of expression
Judgement
“The ability to make considered decisions or come to sensible conclusions”
Important for understanding what is good and what is wrong, benefiting myself
e.g when others are not following the rules like staying in the second floor of the new gym, I try not to follow
Weaknesses
Humility
Potentially depicted as uncooperative/not open to resolving mistakes or learning from them, closed mindset
Reflecting more on my mistakes in progressive manner, understanding mistakes is a massive factor in my career path, need to be the absolute best version of yourself to succeed
Humour
Maybe take situations too seriously, meaning I struggle to relax in situations and take things lightly. Many enjoy more relaxed environments and can help with overall appeal like during interviews
I can start taking notice of how other utilise humour in their conversations and apply those to mine. Eventually, it should become natural to me
Zest
I am sometimes disinterested or have low energy, refraining from trying new things; while I do show enthusiasm when doing things I am interested in, others may depict me as less excited when doing activities otherwise
Exploring a 'growth mindset', being more open to try new things. Ask myself more often: if I don't try then how would I know I don't like it?
Forgiveness
May be implicitly keeping resentment towards others in my head and not letting go of them, leaving them in the corner of my mind.
Need to work on this for the sake of my own wellbeing, carrying past actions alongside you only drag you down further, making you feel worse than if you let it go
Honesty
Currently I feel I am fairly honest with those around me, however it could also simply mean being comfortable to be myself around others, tying back into both zest and humour
To improve this I need to normalise my own self and beliefs, which will take a long time before it becomes a natural thought, but afterwards will allow me to be more comfortable
Past & Present Inspirations
Steve Jobs
Founder of Apple and NeXT, CEO of Pixar
Assisted in the creation of the Macintosh, iPod, iPhone and iPad
Why is he inspirational?
Imagined the future of technology and made it possible
Jumpstarted several revolutions in technology
The personal computer revolution - Macintosh (1984)
The portable music revolution - iPod (2001)
The smartphone revolution - iPhone (2007)
Burning passion for his job and to do what he loves
Perfectionism when creating his products, making sure they are the absolute best they can be
Immaculate marketing and presentation skills that get his point across and make simple solutions sound exciting
Shows to me that you should always be passionate about what you do, and if you do, amazing things will happen
I always rewatch his presentations in order to improve my speaking and presentation skills, helps a lot in action project
Tim Cook
Current CEO of Apple, after Steve Jobs' death
Overviewed the release of Apple products, like the Apple Watch, AirPods and the Apple Vision Pro
Demonstrates how you do not need to be a bold and loud leader in order to succeed; if you have a goal and commit, you will achieve it
Why is he inspirational?
Instead of focusing on short term growth and major innovations, he focused on long term growth of Apple
Advocacy
Strong advocate for the environment and recently placed a constant push for more carbon neutral products
Advocate for human rights and equality, being the first ever Fortune 500 CEO to publicly come out as gay
Joined Apple with a goal to improve the supply chain, with its impact multiplying Apple's valuation by 10 since 2011
"Be the best, not the first"
Also shows to stand up for what you will believe in, otherwise nothing will happen
AJR
New York band of 3 brothers who write, produce and publish their own music
Created many popular radio songs, such as I'm Ready, Weak, Bang!, Burn the House Down
Why are they inspirational?
Only broke through in 2013 despite tap-dancing and making songs since 2005
Originally started by making their own songs with just a laptop and a microphone, showing how you can start from anywhere
Often cover issues such as mental health, anxiety, growing up and social issues within their songs and lyrics
Despite often receiving significant criticism on their albums and songs, they continue to create what they love to share it to the niche set of fans who also do too
Produce songs with creative twists, like 1930s orchestras or an album about finding your own path
Demonstrate to never give up on your dreams; how even if others say otherwise
Creativity is a valued skill in life and can be used to enlighten others in your path
Values, Passions, Skills
Values
Curiousity
The want to continue learning and growing in life is the basis for many core values like creativity and innovation
Driving force of my interest in science and medicine in general, if I was not curious I would not have gained my initial interest in it
I believe it helps me in remaining interested with my passions outside of school, which can benefit me later in life
Grit
One value that has been taught and mentioned a lot in my primary school
Absolute success always includes challenges along the way, without facing them I believe it's impossible to reach the end goal
It's needed for long term goals, like my future career and school assignments, if I simply give up I will get nowhere
Balance
Balance between all the things we do are essential to ensure things like mental health, hobbies and schoolwork are evenly taken care of
It allows for me to understand my limit and to prevent overworking or underworking myself, ensure that everything is "just right"
This also avoids burn out, allowing me to continue exploring my passions in the future
Passions
Technology
It's been my main interest since Year 3, following the release of new smartphones or laptops and reading about their hardware and software
Recently found a few others in GIHS who share a similar passion for technology and inspired me to invest more time into the hardware segment of technology and how to repair it
A big factor in my personality and identity as a whole; I feel like its incorporation in any career is a deciding factor in whether I consider it or not
Music
Newer interest, I started listening to music around the end of Year 7 after friends encouraged me to do it
Acts as a way for me to think about the meaning of what I am listening to and appreciate its beauty and excellence, relating to some of the concepts depicted within the songs
Encourages me to form my own interpretations on each song's meaning, which will be useful in fields that require problem solving
Science and Medicine
A massive influence in my childhood as my parents both work in the science and medicine fields, often telling me stories about their day and what they did
My aunt was another factor, who would help me create science experiments to perform at home, creating fascination for the field. When I was 7, I also had a large obsession with space and planets, making me do heavy research on them
Means I could possibly focus on the healthcare field, which is largely based on science and medical research
Skills
Creative Ideation
When given a prompt I feel like I can work with others to think outside of the box, like in Action Project where we needed to work together to create product ideas rapidly
I feel like I find it fairly easy to come up with a completely original concept for an idea, like for the following LEAP product I combined two of my interests to form it
Organisation/Perfectionism
Feel like this has been a recent strong suit as I feel confident in remembering deadlines either through a to-do planner or in memory
I always aim to completely finish my assignments at least a day prior to their due date and spend time improving it
I do feel like sometimes I am a perfectionist, which in large-scale projects is good but with a short deadline could be a detrimental factor, so I am aiming to improve that mentality
Presentation Creation/Execution
I feel like early practice with PowerPoint allowed me to create effective presentations early on, and later on I was able to practice summarising key details and engaging visuals
Key aspect of being able to be persuasive in general is using convincing evidence or visuals
I can use this in my future career in order to sway future decisions in my favour as well as improving my communication and critical thinking skills by imagining how to do this
Career Cluster - The Carer
Why?
Helping Others
Forming strong bonds with people that I help
Lets me form meaningful bonds with others
I value strong bonds with others as it opens me to a large network of people that create lots of opportunities
By helping others, I could even find friends that last a lifetime
Gives me a sense of purpose and motivation for me everyday
Allows me to wake up every day one goal- to help and care for others
Knowing that my actions will one day benefit a lot of people give me passion to continue with this career cluster
Gives an impact that I can see for myself
Seeing my actions make an immediate or noticeable difference gives me concrete evidence or motivation to continue going on
Science & Technology
How the human body works fascinates me
Crucial for assisting in treating patients and having a genuine interest in it assists with understanding and motivation
Inspired by others already interested/in those fields
Mum is a pharmacist who taught me a lot about medicines and viruses in past, inspiring me to learn more about them
Dad used to work as biologist and once brought me to lab, fueling some initial interest in microscopes and experiments
Some peers have shared their interest in biology and biomedical studies with me
Already have a massive interest in technology
Fluency and interest in smartphones and laptops makes it easier for me to understand medical equipment
Familiarity with technology allows one aspect of jobs like doctor or radiologist to become a simple routine
Leadership
Acting as a role model for others
As oldest sibling/cousin in my family I want to demonstrate responsibility and organisation to them, factors I need to exemplify in the carer cluster
It means I can hopefully inspire others, maybe under my care or coworkers to follow my actions, making another difference in another person's life
Advocating for others
I sometimes see news articles or stories of people in general being mistreated by their doctor or someone of higher authority to them
Patients are in their most vulnerable state, I want to hopefully use my position as a carer to advocate for my patients if they cannot do it themselves
Use my experiences learnt from helping others to express policies like human rights and equality
Pathways/To-Do List
Currently (Year 10, 11, 12)
Science subjects like Biology, Chemistry
Learn more about the human body
Ways to express data and interpret information scientifically
Essentially a small preview of the carer cluster
Maths and English
Think outside of the box and interpret things
Rapidly solve challenging puzzles
Learn how to express and communicate ideas efficiently and effectively
Study habits
Continue testing out to-do list apps and focus apps to optimise studying habits
Sleep earlier to have a clear mind each day and reduce stress
Analyse feedback and potentially begin reflecting on mistakes and how you can avoid/improve them next time
Utilise from Past (Year 7, 8)
Build upon leadership experience from Student Leadership in Year 6/7/8
Remain passionate with my interests and do not ignore them; many build understanding and may assist in the future
Continue being as hardworking as I possibly can- just try my best! I can do this!
Potential Career Pathways (To-do in the future)
Medicine
Healthcare and technology combined into one; I can choose which type of doctor I want to be based on my interests throughout university
Need to work extremely hard in the following few years in order to achieve a high Year 12 ATAR, and then develop my abstract/critical thinking skills to pass the entrance examinations into the course
As I can choose so many different parts of this field, I am not tied down immediately to something I dislike and I can have a taste-test of each option during training
Optometry
Focuses on my technological interests as I can utilise medical equipment as well as helping people with their vision
Once again need to achieve a high ATAR to get into the course
Might be good for me as I have experienced going to the optometrist before
Radiology
Another fairly technologically heavy one; I can perform X-rays, ultrasounds, MRIs and CTs on patients, requiring significant expertise in the respective equipment needed
Could be risky due to radiation exposure so it is under consideration
Needs a fairly good ATAR and I think my expertise in technology could assist in understanding the job better
Capabilities
Confident Capability - Collaboration
Why I Feel Confident
I try and keep my groupmates focused on the task at hand
I try and use my own focus to remind groupmates to steer their focus onto our task
Set deadlines for different parts of the task, encouraging myself and others to remain focused to stay on track
Generally don't believe I go off task often and stay focused on my work
I try and be the one to initiate or assist in the division of roles throughout group members
When dividing roles I try and identify what each member would like their role to be, or through what their strengths are
e.g if someone likes to conduct research I would most likely allow them to take that role
I also have recently check in with group members every lesson to see progress and discuss whether any group members need assistance from others
I feel fairly comfortable with working with anybody
If I am working with people from different classes that I do not really know, I feel comfortable conversing with them over the task
Allows me to get to know them while still being productive
In previous years this is how I have met some of my friends or gotten to know some people in my class better
Evidence
Action Project Spin-Off Task
First group project of 2025- I was paired with two other year 10s that I had not met previously
For this task I divided the tasks we needed to complete into different sections based on the ~4 week timeline we had to complete it and created deadlines
Even though my groupmates occasionally got distracted, the existence of a deadline helped in ensuring all material was completed efficiently
First task I began to check in with groupmates routinely, and it allowed me to support them when they needed help and vice versa
At the end I learnt a lot about my groupmates, like the types of activities they like doing and their learning styles relative to mine
Digital Tech Skills Task
Was not really a group task, but I feel like in essence it was as it promoted helping one another with our code
As I finished the majority of my code extremely early, I was able to assist my friends with their code for the remainder of the task duration
In return, I got to have more firsthand experience with different types of code and how to tackle them effectively, experience I will be able to carry into my other assessment tasks this term
Food Tech Cultural Foods Assignment
The main assessment task from Term 4 last year, where we had to work in groups to create a cultural bakery item
Was paired with two individuals that I was not too happy with collaborating with as I was worried they would not contribute
As there was no skill differences between the questions, we decided to equally split the questions amongst us three in an alternating pattern
1 member was not carrying their weight, so I tried my best to do their share of work by routinely reminding them and explaining how they were not carrying their weight
While they did not contribute much in the end, I feel like the way I approached it was fairly good and hopefully the same strategy could be used in the future for anyone else not contributing
How it has been developed since last year?
Year 10 environment
As moving into Year 10 I didn't know anyone outside of the mentor group, it provided immense opportunity to improve communication and collaboration skills with new people- not just in regards to group tasks
Worked with students I did not know previously in Action Project, allowing me to get to know them better as well as their other friends
Other subjects like Chinese and Digi Tech face the same circumstances and as there is a small amount of people I do know it is easier and more encouraging to approach others to get to know them
Been more open to others
In Year 7 and 8 I while I would allow others in my group to contribute ideas, I felt like I would always be the first to begin the conversation or contribute the first idea
Recently I generally try not to be the absolute first to contribute each time; I can then process their initial ideas to build upon my own to contribute, or even rethink it entirely
Needs Improvement Capability - Citizenship
Why it needs work
Find it difficult to get involved in many community activites
Worries about balancing school life, home life and everything else
Will this affect my studies significantly? Is it too difficult to commit to?
Lots of factors for if I would participate; if other people I know are participating or how much commitment would be needed or whether I would enjoy it later on
Hard to see another person's perspective sometimes
Difficult when often I am fixed on my own beliefs, potentially locking out others'
May be so focused on a discussion point I am trying to make that others are sometimes closed off, affecting collaboration
I am not the first to stand up to an issue
Often am not the first to notice or speak out against an issue in class or school
Sometimes I do not notice the issue at all, only when another person speaks out first
Sometimes I notice but do not say anything immediately as I am unsure of others' opinions on it
What I am doing to improve
Try and be more open about extracurriculars/activities
When I see an opportunity I try to not immediately shut it down; weigh and consider the options and its benefits and negatives
Still take studies into consideration but also prioritise other factors like benefits later on too
Try and keep an open mind about friends; I am doing this to make friends, not just retain my current ones
Who cares what others think? (sometimes)
In some situations, an independent opinion away from others is necessary for change
Aiming to be more comfortable with going away from others' opinions
Think: "Who cares what others may think if it's for the right cause"
Follow up on more global and national news
Allows me to practice my evaluation skills through ethics or personal judgement
I can then apply that judgement on my own in real life
I can identify issues that I am passionate in and see how I can help to change it in my community or school
