Steps to Analysing and Annotating a Poem

Begin
Read poem all the way through at least twice, read out loud and listen to it
Make a note of your first impressions or immediate responses positive and negative, even if it changes

Literal meaning
Look up and write down the meaning of words you: Don't know, Sort of know and important words even if you don't know them

Title
Title is carefully chosen
Often gives subject matter or themes

Tone

Consider who is speaking in the poem
May or may not be the author of the poem
What are the emotions and why do you think that?
If you were to imagine the speaker, who would you see? Male, female, young, old etc
These details help describe the tone

Sound and Rhythm (+Rhyme)

Rhythm affects the meaning of the poem
Heavily stressed or repeated words give you a clue to the overall meaning of the poem
What sound devices are used?
Is there are definite rhyme scheme?
How does it affect your response to the poem?
Is it humorous? Childish like a nursery rhyme?

Structure

How is the poem structured?
Sections are called Stanzas
The shape of the poem helps figure out the structure
There might be repeating sections to emphasize important points

Visual Devices
Look for the pictures or images the poet has drawn in your mind, what devices are used?
