the kettle
a small appliance with a heating element
design and construction of a kettle:
tightly fitting lid
spout
water level indicator
handle
jug
on/off switch
thermostat
indicator light
heating element
flex and three-pin plug
Working principal of a kettle:
water heats
heated element heats water surrounding it by convection currents, water rises as it heats, colder water flows to bottom, continues circulating until all water reaches same temperature
thermostats
when water reaches 100 degrees , the thermostat will automatically turn off flow of electricity
heating element
electricity flows through the heating element, offers resistance to the flow of electricity causing the element to heat up.
boil-dry device
automatically turns off the flow of electricity to the kettle if there is an insufficient amount of water to cover the element which prevents overheating/electrical fire.
guidelines for using a kettle
Ensure heating element is covered with water before switching on to avoid electrical fire or overheating
Allow kettle to cool before refilling otherwise burns or scalds could occur.
Unplug kettle before filling to avoid electrical shock.
guidelines for caring for and cleaning a kettle:
Never immerse the kettle in water when cleaning
Wipe outer casing with war, damp cloth to remove splshes
Descale regularly, limescale builds up and slows down the kettles boiling time
