Online Safety
Identity Theft
How to prevent it: Destroy documents with personal information using a shredder, cancel and lost credit/debit cards immediately and post as little as possible on social media
How to spot it:Unrecognisable transactions on your bank account, letters received about debts and loans and contracts made without your knowledge
-
Identity theft is when a criminal uses someone's personal information to access accounts or steal documents like a drivers license and a passport on your name
Skimming
To prevent this: Cover your pin when inserting it into any ATM, be sure card reader are not damaged or odd looking, keep an eye that your money stays with you and doesn't get stolen
Skimming can occur when an illegal device is installed on an ATM that captured data and records the cardholder's pin
-
Skimmers are tiny machines that steal personal information used for money, goods and payments to another account
Online predators
-
To prevent this , don't talk to strangers, be aware of risky behaviour sent to you, report inappropriate photos you receive, don't share too much information about yourself
Online predators are people who use the internet to exploit children and teens for sexual and violent purposes. This includes child grooming, unwanted exposure of materials and pictures, online harassment and threats to cause fear or embarrassment.
If you are worried about something online, tell someone, block the person contacting you, and/or contact a supporting service (e.g CEOP)
-
Viruses
A computer virus is a program that replicates itself. If the replication succeeds, then it is said that the areas affected have caught the virus.
Viruses can be spread through email, texts, social networks and Internet dowloads.
The best way to prevent a computer virus is by using a security software, e.g. McAffee, avoiding unsafe or not trusted websites and always hover over a link or URL to see where it will take you
-
Phishing
Attacks can steal money and intellectual property, sabotage systems, and install malware
To prevent this:Make authentication harder for attackers to gain access to certain websites and accounts you use, use a firewall or a proxy server that can detect malwares and viruses on your device
Phishing can be conducted by text, email, SMS, or even social media
Phishing is a social attack when criminals send you a message that directs a person to a dodgy website or malware when opened.
-
Cyberbullying
There are loads of different ways that someone could bully someone online and some are more severe than others but the most recommended thing to do, if it was in your case, is to tell someone
Tips for cyberbullying: Don't self-blame, don't retaliate, and save any evidence.
Cyberbullying is where someone bullies someone else online. This can be on a game, on social media or through texts/emails.
-
Hackers
Black hat hackers engage in cyber crime to get financial gain, implant malware into other devices or for cyber espionage purposes.
There are 3 different types of hackers; white hat, black hat and even one in between, black hat. White hat hackers only use their skills to detect vulnerabilities in hardware, software and networks and make updates.
How to prevent it: install malware protections, be cautious of the apps and files you download, update your software regularly and avoid visiting unsafe websites
A hacker is a skilled person in information technology who uses computers to gain unauthorised access to certain data.
-
Censorship
Anyone who feels like the media has invaded their privacy or offended them can report it and complain to various agencies and associations like Press Complaints Commission or Advertising Standards Authority
Examples include pornography which is illegal in most countries and military censorship which is to keep military intelligence and tactics confidential and unknown to the enemy. Or it coould just be an age rating for a film because the content could stress or scare little children under the age suggestion.
Censorship is the prohibition of certain parts of books, films, videos and news. This can be because of violence, bad language, and sexually explicit content.

The colours that match together are the areas in online safety that link.
I believe that skimming, identity theft and phishing match because they all somehow give access to someone to you details for money, intellectual property and to use your identity against you (e.g. a criminal using your ID on your name to get you in trouble)
I also think that online predators and censorship match because online predators are people who target you for sexual and violent purposes online and censorship is a method used by law to prevent certain types of people from seeing things that aren't appropriate for them.
