Character Traits (Kiterunner)
Hassan
Caring
Hassan was always carin and loyal towards the people he served that is Baba and Amir. He was loyal to Amir and was always the person to take care of him and stand up for him.
Selfess
Hassan never thought about himself in any situation. Throughout the book he always stood up for Amir and really never thought about what could happen to him. When Assef confronted them for the first time Amir never thought of fighting him or trying to be aggressive to keep him away. While Hassan was ready with his slingshot and released the stone onto Assef's face. Such instances were also seen in further in the book around the Kite Running Competition. Since he knew that he needed baba's approval and his acceptance.
Evidence 1: "But before you sacrifice yourself for hime think about this: Would he do the same for you?"
Amir
Insecure
Amir shows a lot of insecurity throughout the book, there are a lot of moments where he seems to be jealous and envious of others. this is largely due to the lack of attention and approval he gets from his father, making him very insecure of his abilities
Evidence #1 - "He asked me to fetch Hassan to, but I lied and told him Hassan has the runs. I wanted Baba all to myself. And besides, one time at Ghargha Lake, Hassan and I were skimming stones and Hassan made his stone skip eight times. The most I managed was five. Baba was there, watching, and he patted Hassan on the back. Even put his arm around his shoulder." (Page 13-14)
The evidence shows how Amir has this insecurity when it comes to his father. The fact that he didn't bring Hassan along just because Hassan did better shows that he is insecure about his abilities.
Evidence #2 - "I always felt like Baba hated me a little. And why not? After all, I had killed his beloved wife. his beautiful princess, hadn't I?" (Page 19)
This evidence shows how insecure Amir is, he is even willing to feel guilty about his mere existence, just so he has some justification of his father's actions. The insecurity shows when he blames himself.
Jealous
Amir shows jealousy throughout chapters 1-15 ( the chapters before moving to America ). The jealousy gets triggered by Baba giving his attention to people other than himself which shows how he did not receive validation from Baba. Amir sees Hassan as a threat to his relationship between him and his father, which is spurred by his jealous nature. He wants his father to only show him attention and not show Hassan father-like love.
Evidence: "He asked me to fetch Hassan to, but I lied and told him Hassan has the runs. I wanted Baba all to myself." This shows how Amir created a distance between Hassan just so he could receive attention from his father
After moving back to Afghanistan from America Amir was able to become a selfless adult. After moving to America he developed into being a selfless adult allowing himself to think about other people.
Baba
Confident
Assertive
Dismissive
"Well, that is very good, isn't it" Then nothing more. He just looked at me through a cloud of smoke. Baba has no commonality with Amir and he doesn't feel the need to show interest in what his son does. He dismisses his talents and sees no point in trying to engage with his disappointing son. In Afghanistan, he sees no use for his sons talents so he dismisses them in a way to dissuade him from pursuing it.
Supportive.
In America, Baba becomes more supportive of Amir's passion. He brags about his kid "He is going to be a writer" Initially, he dismisses it, but realizes that Amir is not going to shrink down. He also knows that Amir has promise and he can do it, in America at least, where it is acceptable.
Sohrab
Innocent
Sohrab's character had a certain amount of childlike wonder and innocence at the beginning. He was more trusting and optimistic. His family life and home was quite happy and he had a thriving livelihood
"I wish you could see Sohrab. He is a god boy. Rahim Khan Sahib and I have taught him to read and write so he does not grow up stupid like his father. And can he shoot with that slingshot! I take Sohrab around Kabul sometimes and buy him candy. There is still a monkey man in Shar-e-Nau and if we run into him, I pay him to dance for Sohrab. You should see how he laughs! (217)
"By the time Sohrab was two, he was calling her Sasa. The two of them were inseparable" (211)
Sohrab was able to easily build relationships and trust the people around him, he built relationships with his family members and easily accepted the love and care they were giving him.
Corrupted (Cynical)
