Fatima Cruz P3, Integumentary System
Layers of the Skin
Epidermis
-
Structures = Stratum basale/spinosum/granuiosum/corneum/lucielem/germinatium, basal cells, kertinocytes, and melanocytes
Function = to protect the body from harm (nothing to enter the body, such as, bacteria, viruses, germs, and chemicals)
Dermis
-
Structures = epidermal ridges, dermal papillae, blood vessels, smooth muscle, and nervous tissue
Function = support/protect the skin and deeper layers, maintains thermoregulation, and aid in sensation
Hypodermis (not a layer)
-
Structures = blood vessels, areolar tissue, and adipose tissue
Function = stores energy, connects the dermis layer to your skin, muscles, and bones, protects body from harm
-
Skin Cancer & ABCDE Rule
Skin Cancer Facts
- arises in non-pigmented epithelial cells in the deep layer of the epidermis or from melanocytes
- cutaneous melanomas is the most common type of skin cancer (exposing) to light skinned people over forty years old of age regularly exposed to sunlight
- can be caused by short, intermittent exposure to high intensity sunlight
- can be triggered by UVA/UVB type of ultraviolet radiation
- three stages to skin cancer: Squamous cell Carcinoma (originating from epithelial cells), Basal cell Carcinoma (originating from epithelial cells), and Melanoma (deadly stage of skin cancer)
- the 2 common stages of skin cancer are Squamous and Basal cell Carcinoma
ABCDE Rule Facts
- provides a check list for melanoma
- A = for asymmetry
- B = for border (irregular)
- C = for color (more than one)
- D = for diameter (more than 6 millimeters)
- E = for evolution or change
- usually appears in the skin on the back or limbs
Accessory Organs
Nail
-
Structure = nail plate, nail bed, lunula, lateral nail fold, cuticle, and free edge
-
Glands
Sudoriferous
Aprocrine
-
-
Function = responds to fear, emotional upset, pain, or sexual arousal )produces body order)
Eccrine
Location = on forehead, neck, and back
-
-
-
-
Hair
-
Structure = hair follicle, hair shaft, hair root, hair bulge, and hair papilla
Function = develops epithelial stem cells at the base of a hair follicle, conserves body heat and insulating against cold weather
-
