Integumentary Concept Map
Skin Cancer
ABCDE rule
C
color
D
diameter (more than 8 millimeters)
B
border
E
evolution/ changes
A
asymmetry
Cutaneous carcinomas is the most common type of skin cancer
usually affects lighter skinned people (this does not mean darker skinned people can't get skin cancer)
Comes from being exposed to the sunlight
Really rare, grow slowly and are usually surgically removed or with radiation treatment
Skin cancer comes from ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB)
Can be prevented by using sunscreens/ sunblocks which repel/ reflect the UV
Accessory organs
glands
sweat glands
apocrine glands: active during puberty, responds to fear, emotional upset, pain and sexual arousal, sweat contains proteins and fats that produce body odor
eccrine glands: responds to body temp, found in the forehead, neck, back
sebaceous glands
secretes a oily substance (sebum) which waterproofs our skin and moisturizes our hair and skin
modified sweat glands
ceruminous glands: makes wax in the ear
mammary glands
produce breast milk
nails
protective covering at the end of our fingers and toes
has a nail plate overlaying a layer of skin surface, the nail bed
lunula, a half moon shaped structure at the base of the nail plate, growing region of the nail root
hair
can be found on the palms, soles, lips, nipples, and portions of external genitalia
hair is made up of dead, keratinized epithelial cells
Skin
Functions of the skin
helps make vitamin D
body temp regulation
houses sensory receptors
prevents pathogens from entering (protective layer
is waterproof
heals wounds
Layers of the skin
dermis
thick inner layer made up of nervous tissue, smooth muscle, blood vessels and connective tissue
hypodermis
underneath the dermis, consists of aerolar and adipose tissues, contains major blood vessels, conserves body heat
epidermis
top layer of the skin made up of stratified squamous et
skin color comes from melanin, the more melanin present the darker the skin will be
Degree of Burns/ Rules of Nines
2nd degree
destroys some of the epidermis layer and some of the dermis (burning clothes hot liquids) there are the most painful because nerves are exposed
3rd degree
destroys the epidermis and dermis and accessory structures, turns leathery and dry. (can come from corrosive chemicals) may need skin transplant surgery
1st degree
any burn only affecting the epidermis is a 1st degree burn (sunburn) only takes between a few days to 2 weeks to heal without any scars
Rules of Nines
an estimate of where our body is divided into certain regions each represents 9% for the total body surface (ex: torso, front of arm, back of leg)
disorders associated with the Integumentary system
staph infection
bacterial infection
chickenpox
Varicella zoster virus
psoriasis
skin inflammation due to autoimmune disease
fungal infections
collection of diseases from fungi
acne
clogged pores/ over production of oils
