Primary experience of the Devine was at the heart of religion and came before ‘second hand religious life’ e.g. rituals or theology
PINT- passive when people feel another power was acting on them. Ineffable to difficult to put into words. Noetic insight grasped through intuition. Transient a short experience more significant effect.

Conversion experiences
Life changing religious expeirence from unhappy to unified and happy, religious ideals and morals are central and personal habits.
Example S. Hadley, had suicidal thoughts a drunk who had a sick soul helped and unified.
Psychological factors

Problems with it - subjective because religious experience tends to be private and can be of value to the individual
Drugs and medical deficiencies, can effect whether these experiences are religious or mental, Paul’s conversion could be linked to epilepsy
Could be caused by psychological changes in the brain e.g. due to drugs, hormones, alcohol . Stimulating visions, hearing voices etc.

Higher power? No philosophical argument using logic and reason is sufficient enough to answer questions about the existence of god
