U5 Research task: Self-Powered Lamp
quality
The lamp will use high quality components with metal bearings for the crank to make sure it is sturdy and doesn't break
The Lamp will be good quality as it will be tested thoroughly to check for any weak points. The lamp will be put together with screws to ensure every part of the lamp stays connected and no pieces fall off
The quality of the lamp will be good enough to match the price tag which will be around £20 to £30
Weight
The lamp's exterior shell will be constructed using 3d printed plastic, meaning the lamp will be lightweight enough to be transported
Size
The lamp will be around 450 mm however the lamp will have a flexible goose-neck design which will allow the user to change the height and direction of the lamp to whatever their comfortable with
The flexible design will make the lamp very practical for small spaces as the size depend on how far the user decides to adjust the neck of the lamp
The lamp will be easily transported as it can be compressed to a smaller size to be carried
Disposable
The lamp will be designed to be easy to disassemble
Its ability to be easily disassembled means that parts can be replaced when they are broken so that the plastic shell can be reused
Aesthetics
The Lamp will have a dark red colour, so it should go well with most colours
The colour will be a nice dark shade of red
It will have a nice and smooth design with no sharp corners and edges
Design similar to this, but with a handle for generating energy
Maintenence
Maintenance should be easy do to the easy disassembling
The exterior of the lamp is completely 3d printed, so it is very easy and cheap to repair
The hand crank may need to be looked after as it may wear down over time
Ergonomics
The lamp's handle for the crank, will be designed to fit comfortably around the users hand to that they can wind it up to generate power
The lamp will serve its purpose as a desk lamp that is completely self powered
It will improve users experience while studying late at night
Materials
The material of the plastic shell will be ABS because of its durable properties and its ability to be 3d printed
The mechanical parts such as the bearings and couplings will be made out of stainless steel as it needs to be strong to withstand constant turning,
Competition
There are other self powered lamps that use a crank to generate power, however I believe that my design is unique as all other existing fans follow a lantern style design, while mine uses a desk lamp design
Performance
The lamp will be able generate 1 hours worth of light with just 1 minute of turning the crank
Customer
The intended customer for the lamp is university students who need to spend hours studying. The lamp will allow them to study better when it is late in the evening
The lamp will fit the budget of the customer as it will cost around £20 to £30
