The Kidney - Coggle Diagram
The Kidney
-
Osmoregulation
-
kidney helps regulate water potential of blood through controlling both
- volume
- concentration of urine produced
Excretory/Urinary
System
- blood travels through aorta + renal artery to reach kidney @ HP
- kidney acts as complex filter
(HP aids filtration)
- useful products are retained in blood
excretory products + excess water eliminated
- filtered blood leaves kidney
via renal vein
- excretory products + excess water (filtered out) leave kidney via ureter (as urine)
- urine taken to
bladder for storage
- sphincter muscles in base of
bladder control release of urine
- urine exits body via
urethra
Structure
2 main zones
CORTEX
- outer region
- under thin covering layer
MEDULLA
- inner region
- subdivided into pyramids that extend
down into pelvis (large central cavity)
The Nephron
-
structure
- originates as cup-shaped
BOWMAN'S CAPSULE
-
- each BC supplied w blood from
- afferent arteriole
- which branches to form tightly coiled knot of capillaries -
GLOMERULUS
- capillaries unite to form
- efferent arteriole where blood leaves BC
- efferent arteriole branches to form
capillary network - VASA RECTA
-
- nephron itself extends into coiled tube
PROXIMAL CONVOLUTED TUBULE
- PCT extends to LOOP OF
HENLE which dips down into medulla
-
- many N join at
COLLECTING DUCT
- runs down through medulla
- converges at base of pelvis
role of CD
- osmoregulation
- carry urine to pelvis
- becomes DISTAL
CONVOLUTED TUBULE
- empties contents (urine) into ureter
& takes urine to bladder
