REM Sleep
Characterised y spontaneous bursts of rapid eye movement where the eyes dart back and forth. Heart rate is faster, blood pressure rises, breathing is quicker. Usually, internally, brain and body are active. Externally, body appears calm and inactive. Thus, REM sleep shares properties of both light and deep sleep. Most dreaming occurs in this stage. Dreams have a narrative, are vivid, can be remembered, Can also occur in NREM, but less frequent, structured, or remembered.
Brain Wave Patterns: rapid, irregular, mixed frequency activity - similar to being awake
Lasts For: 1-5 minutes in first sleep cycle, 12-15 minutes in second, 20-25 minutes in later cycles.
Percentage of Total Sleep Time: 20-25%
