Coastal landforms - Coggle Diagram
Coastal landforms
Caves, arches and stacks
-
- Cracks are eroded and enlarged by hydraulic action to form a wave-cut notch at bottom of cliff
- Gets eroded further to create a cave
- Cave is eroded all the way through to form an arch
- Overtime, erosion widens arch and process of weathering weakens it's roof
- Roof collapses to form isolated pillar of rock called a stack
- Stack is eroded and collapses to form a stump
Spits
-
- Longshore drift transports sand along coast
-
- Deposition continues - spit grows out into sea
- Spit is exposed to changes in wind and wave direct so curves
- Saltmarsh is formed by accumulation of mud in sheltered water behind the spit
Beaches
-
Sandy beaches
Formed in sheltered bays, associated with low-energy constuctive waves. Flat and extensive beaches often backed by sand dunes
Pebble beaches
Higher energy coastlines, destructive waves remove sand leaving behind pebbles. Tend to be steep and narrow
