The Organisation of African Unity was established in May 1963 by 32 Heads of Independent African States where the charter of the African unions was signed. At that time, the union was known as the Organization of African Unity(the OAU)
Its vision was for a united Africa, free and in control of its destiny which was highlighted in the OAU charter.
On September 9, 1999, the Heads of State and Governing Body of the Organisation of African Unity issued a Declaration (the Sirte Declaration) calling for the establishment of an African Union(AU) to accelerate the process of integration into the continent, to develop economically while addressing multifaceted social and political problems
Now, African Union is comprised of 55 member states that make up the countries of Africa.
