Are visual representations always helpful in the communication of knowledge? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and mathematics.
PT No.5 May 2023

visual representations - are representation or demonstration of concepts accompanied by images or texts.

helpful

  • beneficial
  • offers assistance
  • supports success

communication of knowledge

  • communication among who ?

human behaviour

what kind of knowledge can be used as knowledge of communication ?

Three aspects of communication knowledge are identified and research related to them presented. These are domain-related knowledge, discourse knowledge and mediating knowledge.

communication - the imparting or exchanging of information by speaking, writing, or using some other medium.

insights from human sciences

how people react to things

how humans are manipulated

help us improve society, through improved public policy

definition

"A branch of study which deals with people or their actions, including the social sciences and the humanities, as contrasted with the natural sciences or physical sciences" (Oxford)

The study of the reality of being human--the social, cultural, biological and behavioral aspects of human existence. (Adapted from the 2015 TOK Guide, Page 37)

explain underlying patterns

understand what society wants

how they interact

why they react the way they do

we develop according to that idea

understand how decisions are made

visual representations can be found for:

(a) phenomena that are not observable with the eye (i.e., microscopic or macroscopic);

(b) phenomena that do not exist as visual representations but can be translated as such (i.e., sound);

(c) in experimental settings to provide visual data representations (i.e., graphs presenting velocity of moving objects).

example

tree diagram in solving probability

venn diagram

people who didn't know how to interpret it may think that tree diagram is not helpful in the communication of knowledge

because they cannot write the solution for that probability problem, they cannot get the accurate probability

role of models in human sciences

models can be used for gaining a general understanding of a phenomenon without being complex or detailed enough to provide predictions (explanatory model)

shows all possible logical relations between a finite collection of different sets.

example

psychology test

food pyramid
Maslow's hierarchy of needs

image

may not be helpful

the personality shown is not as accurate as we think, as it may accurate to the majority of people but not all

the result shown may be based on the perspective that cannot be applicable to all people

the answer chosen may due to the respondent's opinion, but the result shows would be based on past experience which contradict to the real one.

image

not helpful to all people

it depends on how people react to this visual representation

not always helpful - people still applying their eating habit in a wrong way even though they know about this knowledge well

they act they way they want

but why ?

helpful in communication of knowledge

can tell the personality of the respondents

helpful in communication of knowledge

it can be the medium of communication between scientist and people

can tell us the knowledge in which we will know the amount of food needed for each categories

but in the other hand, this visual representation is not helpful in such a way when people ignore the knowledge

whos are that people , why they cant interpret

are all knowledge can be communicated

giving or receiving , or utk membuktikan

why this is consider as vr

not always helpful

  • if people who interpret it didn't have knowledge to interpret the visual representation
  • thus, they can't communicate about that knowledge very well
  • they can't explain that visual interpretations to others

what kind of knowledge ,, give example

how much are they helpful?

how does the visual representations are created?

why does the VR help in explaining something?

how the vr simplified things?

advantages of vr

seeing a graph, chart, or other visual representation of data is more comfortable for the brain to process, than for it to read and comprehend text, and then convert this into a mental visualization (that likely will not be entirely accurate) of the data

disadvantages of vr

involves the use of poorly designed visual aids that are difficult to understand or see. If irrelevant information is presented, images can also be distracting and impede the understanding of concepts they should be trying to clarify.

always

even though if 1% think that VR is not helpful, then it will not always be helpful

if that people is not a visual learner

to what extent does VR are helpful in the communication of knowledge

very often helpful, usually helpful, depending on certain context, certain people, certain kinds of information

in what way?

how often?

  • help you in some way, such as doing part of your job for you or by giving you advice or information.

not about gaining knowledge through visual,,
but about communicating knowledge through visual

something we can see, depiction of knowledge

  • intended to convey meaning and make the information more accessible and memorable.

are

yes or no or maybe

all the time

one knower transfers the knowledge to another knower // or groups of knowers

visuals are permanent

visuals allow time for language processing

speak or dance is not permanent

layout of a mall

the model helps us to see the mall almost from a bird's view and without us having actually to go and investigative ourselves

what mathematical knowledge is being communicated

visual representation vs visual presentation

visual representation

visual presentation

the way information is depicted

a way to display data in a visual format

the manner in which information is presented, such as through slides, posters, or videos, for the purpose of communication or education.

feel of the information being presented
