I LOVE YOU VIRUS
Onel de Guzman
Malware short term for “malicious software” is a file or code, typically delivered over a network, that infects, explores, steals or conducts virtually any behavior an attacker wants. And because malware comes in so many variants, there are numerous methods to infect computer systems.
Different types of Malware
Ransomware is designed to encrypt your files and block access to them until a ransom is paid.
Spyware invades your computer and attempts to steal your personal information such as credit card or banking information, web browsing data, and passwords to various accounts.
Keyloggers keep track of your keystrokes on your keyboard and record them on a log. This information is used to gain unauthorized access to your accounts.
Adware is unwanted software that displays advertisements on your screen. Adware collects personal information from you to serve you with more personalized ads.
A worm replicates itself by infecting other computers that are on the same network. They’re designed to consume bandwidth and interrupt networks.
Rootkits enable unauthorized users to gain access to your computer without being detected.
A Trojan (or Trojan Horse) disguises itself as legitimate software with the purpose of tricking you into executing malicious software on your computer.
ILOVEYOU virus could destroy all kinds of files including photographs, audio files and documents. Affected users who didn't have backup copies lost them permanently. In March 1999, similar to ILOVEYOU, the Melissa virus also replicated itself by using Outlook address books.
Onel de Guzman, a 24-year-old Filipino cyber genius, confesses in developing computer viruses but denies liability for the "Love Bug" virus's $10 billion in losses after infecting computers all over the world.
At the city's AMA Computer College, Onel de Guzman studied computer science. He was a member of the clandestine hacker organization Grammersoft, and he soon rose to the position of prime suspect in a police investigation.
It spread so quickly that multiple large businesses, including Ford Motor Company, AT&T, and Microsoft, as well as governmental institutions, including the Pentagon, CIA, U.S. Army, and parliaments in Denmark and the United Kingdom, were forced to shut down their email systems entirely while they worked to contain the virus and lessen its effects.
The Love Bug or ILOVEYOU VIRUS pandemic began on 4 May, 2000.
