Is replicability necessary in the production of knowledge? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
Natural Science
Claim:
Replicability ensures the data obtained is reliable enough to produce a new knowledge, thus it is important and necessary
-
Counter-claim
Since the data obtained can be explained by other theories that supported the evidence, replicability is not needed
-
Relating to PT:
Some knowledge in regards to natural sciences requires replicability, especially in the data obtained to prove the hypothesis theorised. The fact that science can be considered as universal, in it undoubtedly that science knowledge must be able to be produced involving other communities of knowers, not just the scientific community
Researchers and students may or may not be in the same scientific community, due to their vast difference in knowledge acquired by them. So, they have different
-
Human Science
Claim:
Knowledge produced in human sciences are tied to human behaviour, which are sometimes unpredictable, thus it is not possible and not necessary to be repeated
-
Counter-claim:
The same stimulus given to the test subject in a human experiment gives the same observation and result, thus replicability is needed to support that production of knowledge
-
Relating to PT:
The human sciences relies heavily on human behaviour, which may differs when it comes to the background of the person in the study, whether it is race, culture, religion. People tend to react different even though the same stimulus is given based on these circumstances. Therefore, replicability may not be applied to human sciences for a specific subset of knowledge.
What are some of the behaviours of a person that may differ when human scientist were to conduct an experiment for the production of knowledge?
