PT 5: Are visual representations always helpful in the communication of knowledge? Discuss with reference to the human sciences and mathematics
Visual representation
1. Introduce the prescribed title2. Defining key terms
- 'visual representation' is a complex concept that connects with fundamental questions of “reality,” ideology and power, agency, as well as signification and the procedures and potentials for interpreting meaning. There is, however, a general agreement that the meaning of an image is “made” at three sites: (1) the site of the image, (2) the site of production, and (3) the viewer interaction. The meaning of visual representation is realized in the interplay across these three sites or factors.
-'communication' is the transmission or exchange of information by speech, writing, or any other media.
3. AOK that will be explored
- Human sciences are the study of human behavior in people and society, and they cover a wide range of disciplines.
- Mathematics is the study of topics such as quantity (numbers), structure, space and change.
4. Main conclusion for the prescribed title
- In human sciences, visual representation is important in giving a better understanding of the human behaviors as there are most factual information that can be complicated to be understood. However, every people has their own method of learning that are suitable for them.
- In mathematics, visual representation is important to give a better understanding of a certain topic through the sample of calculation. however, just the working sample without any explanation about the method used, one may not be able to communicate with the knowledge well.
-
- The word 'always' in this PT indicates that visual representation is the most effective method of learning that enable the knowers to communicate with certain AOK.
- The word 'always' may also suggest that there might be other methods of learning that better help in communicating with the knowledge
- The phrase "visual representation" may come synonymously as a visual learning
- Visual learning, auditory learning, reading and writing and kinesthetic learning.
- These types of learning method is important for the individuals to comprehend what is being told/taught
- However, do everyone has the same learning method ?
- the information is store in the long term memory by pairing the concept with meaningful images
- can act as a stimulators for emotions
Emotions and visual information are processed in the same part of the human brain. Visual stimuli and emotional response are linked in a simple way and these two together generate what we call memories. Hence, powerful images and visual metaphors create strong impressions and lasting memories in learners.
-
Thesis: Visual representation not always be helpful in the communication of knowledge, but it has a large influence on it.
Human sciences
- Scientific practices
- The use of tables, set-up diagram and graph; easy to be interpreted by others/ the experiment can be done easily as the all the diagram provided give useful insights on how to conduct the experiment
- in physics, the apparatus are normally drawn as a symbol instead of its original image, e.g. bulb.
- more simple to be drawn; easily interpreted
- Do people only rely on the given set-up diagram and procedures when doing their experiments ?
- Briefing about the experiment will be done before so that the students can grasp the idea the of the experiment / what actually each of the diagram is about.
- warning or important event will be emphasized prior to the experiment so that mistake will not be done as accurate result is very important to be gained
- just writing the waning on the paper does not really helpful most of the time, unless the font is adjusted.
- The video regarding DNA replication and transcription gives a better understanding to the students rather than the notes alone that just require you to read and memorize them
- it has been said that 80% of what people learn is visual (allen klien)
Why there is a need of visual representation (e.g. graph):
- Convey figures and statistical data in a comprehensible manner
- Other crucial information can be obtained from there (like the gradient in certain graph that give the scientist important data)
- Able to make prediction (when plotting a graph such as the regression graph; future values can be obtained from here). Impossible to predict without this graph as the equation also obtained from there.
in economics

-
A graph or a diagram presents the relationship between two or more sets of data or variables that are related to one another. Graph is most commonly used tool in modern economics. Graph depicts the functional relationship between two or more economic variables. The use of graph provides a better understanding of the economic generalizations. Graph presents a visual picture of an abstract idea. Also it is useful for accuracy and precision. graph and diagram used in economics

Mathematics
- The Monty Hall Problem
- related to the topic of probability; where we need to decide either to change or stay with our final decision.
- most of the students answered to stay, but it is found that it the probability to get the right answer is by changing you final decision.
- create confusion; come up with analogies that is in visual representation of anything (some car, sheep and etc)
- visual representation can be used to make analogies in which further assist the communication of knowledge
- for someone who are not good in math, just the analogies might not even help him/her to grab the idea
- hence they might prefer some explanation (auditory learning)
- we can know how to solve the problem of calculation but not really understand it, hence, we could not communicate with it perhaps by explaining to the others
Ven diagram
a visual representation of mathematical set or collections of objects—that are studied using a branch of logic called set theory
Venn Diagram Symbol
how does it helps ?
- illustrate the logical relationships between two or more sets of items. Often, they serve to graphically organize things, highlighting how the items are similar and different
how does it may not help ?
- limitation regarding the number sets
- While Venn diagrams are great for two or even three sets, they very quickly break down when the number of sets goes beyond three. It’s not like people haven’t tried, though, with results ranging from pointless to downright silly.
limitation of the venn diagram
can be more to argument
even without the diagram people still can refer to graph or just calculate manually (there is still other way around to acquire the knowledge)
mathematical symbol (e.g. +, -, =)
why it is used ?
to prevent mathematician from repeating themselves or having to use a lot of words to write out mathematical ideas
how does it helpful ?
- when having succinct instruction
- by using this symbols, make the instruction looks clearer and more shorter for the brain to interpret easily
when does this is not helpful ?
- when the concept itself is not understood - the symbols will be wrongly placed , hence not assisting in understanding and communicating with the knowledge
why VR ?
- giving people the idea of what does it mean
- the symbol 'pi' refers to 3.14....
- just like how the symbol of women in toilet refer to
Conclusion
- The extent to agree with this statement of visual representation always helpful depends on a particular AOK and what topic it is about because each individual has their own capability to understand certain thing
- Having more than one way of learning method to communicate with knowledge is beneficial
- But still it depends on the individuals themselves
