Does it matter if our acquisition of knowledge happens in "bubbles" where some information and voices are excluded? Discuss with reference to two areas of knowledge.
PT 3
- This question suggests that acquisition of knowledge do happen in bubbles. Is this about usefulness or ethics?
- Being in "bubbles" mean that we only know what we are taught, but in reality they did not include all information (from other parties)
- A response to this question is first, to understand what it means by "acquisition of knowledge" and "bubbles"
- Acquisition of knowledge is the process of absorbing and storing new information in memory, the success of which is often gauged by how well the information can later be remembered (retrieved from memory) Acquisition of Knowledge
- "Bubbles" refers to a good or fortunate situation that is isolated from reality or unlikely to last. It also can be defined as a transparent domed cover or enclosure i.e a place or position that is protected from danger or unpleasant reality
- Other context of "bubbles" - to live in a bubble - is to live life completely absorbed in or insulated by one's limited reality or life experience OR to ignore, avoid or deny reality Live in A Bubble
AOK
- History
the study of change over time, covers all aspects of human society
- an intellectual discipline practiced by historians who try to make sense of the past
- hence, we cannot say things such as "history repeats itself" or "thibgs were always this way"
Methods and Tools
- Historians must answer several questions in their writings
also, they need to address the background of the event, the principals involved, significant dates, and the influence of the event upon guture developments
- how do historians determine if certain events are historical? What considered as historical events, what about the others?
3 Basic Processes
- gathering data, criticism, presentation of facts, interpretation, conclusions
- understanding from the data gathered, writer's objectives, conclusions reached, clear perception of relationships between ecah parts of the pper and the research as a whole
Ethics
- objectivity
- historians should not let their biases cloud a research paper
Unavoidable limits to historical objectivity
- documentation, diversity of writers' personal experiences

- the word "some" suggests that not all information and voices are excluded but there are a number of them. Some things are known but some things are hidden. (by whom?)
- It asks whether it is fine to have some information and voices excluded when acquiring knowledge like does it give any impact if there is bubble or not
- it is fine as long as one acquires from various different bubbles
- What information and whose voices are excluded? Why this happens?
- Who determines which info should be included or excluded?
- What are the limitations/barriers to this bubbles? What causes the bubbles to exists?
What we accept as knowledge may well depend on our perspective, language, values and community of knowers we are most familiar with. We may possess assumptions and even bias that we might be unaware of
- "Bubbles" indicates different opinions exist among community of knowers. Hence, some knowledge from different bubbles are not accepted by another bubbles
- Is it possible for the "bubbles" to disappear in a community of knowers over time? (by learning to accept facts)
- Is it important to have "bubbles" when acquiring knowledge? Or it depends?
- Is it possible for large "bubbles" to have smaller bubbles exist within them?
- Does it give any impact on knowledge acquisition? Who are impacted?
People who seek knowledge might be affected.
Staying in only one bubble could lead people to make unreasonable conclusions
- How do we determine the knowledge is true or false when some information are not included?
- how do we determine a bad or good bubble
- bubbles can also refer to the knowledge community
Bubbles
Filter bubble : an Internet phenomenon where social media platforms limit our exposure to news and other information by using algorithms to prioritize content that matches our demographic profile and online history
- info does not reach us through no fault of our own
- where you dont hear the other side
- impact: intellectual isolated
Epistemic bubble: a phenomenon where we fail to access relevant info sources either intentionally or unintentionally
eg. we deliberately block or unfriend or disconnect people on social media who hold opposing views
eg we only subscribe to blogs and channels that confirm our existing beliefs
- Non internet environment: created if we lack access to broad range of info or we purposefully restrict our access to only specific info sources OR we only mix with people of similar backgrounds and views
Echo chambers : voices are actively excluded and discredited
- happens in academic circle
-depends on manipulating trust by methodically discrediting people and sources of info outside the chamber
- where you don't trust the other side
- how does community of knowers suffer from these information being excluded?
- Does the knowledge gained turn out the same in and out of the bubble? How does bubbles formed in communit of knowers
