Chapter 3: Ecology
Ecological Hierarchy:
1.) Species: group of individuals that share certain characteristics. Distinct from other species .Cannot interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
-
3.) Biotic Community (Biota): Groups of populations in natural areas. Biotic Factors: Include vegetation, animals, microbes, etc. Abiotic Factors: Non-living environment factors.
System: Consists of components that interact to produce patterns of behavior over a period of time. Whole is bigger than sum of the parts.
4.) Ecosystem: interactive communities and abiotic environment affecting them. Made up of many systems.

Environmental factors:
-
Every species has an optimal range, zone of stress, and limits of tolerance for abiotic factors.
-
Synergistic Effect:
Two plus factors interacting cause much greater effect than two acting separately.
Habitat vs Niche
Habitat: Area particular species is adapted to live in, defined by plant community and physical environment.
-
Why do we find shorebirds, like sandpipers, on the beach but certain songbirds, like cardinals, more inland?
-
Study of distribution and abundance of organisms and processes that influence this, their interactions, and their environment.
