Logic Map - Merger
-
Reasons for Merger (PAP)
Economic
Without Merger
-
-
Declining entrepôt trade
- Entrepôt refers to a port, city, or other centre to which goods are brought for import and export, and for collection and distribution
Tariffs imposed by Malayan government
- Made goods entering Malaya from SG more expensive and less desirable to customers in Malaya
- Reduced trade between SG and Malaya
With Merger
-
A common market could be established
- the Malayan hinterland would be a larger market for SG's goods
- increase trade for SG
- more jobs for people in SG
Political
Communist Threat in SG
- Tunku worried that communists would use SG to spread communism into Malaya as there had been communist-instigated strikes in Singapore through unions they had infiltrated (eg. Hock Lee Bus Riots)
- SG and Malaya wanted to remove the communist threat
- There were also fears that the moderates within PAP were losing their hold over the party and the country
