The stomach is divided into 3 histologic sections; cardia, fundus and body, pylorus. The fundus and body are the widest parts of the stomach. The gastric wall consists of four layers; mucosa, submucosa, muscularis externa, and serosa. The mucosa consists of the surface epithelium, the lamina propria, and the muscularis mucosa. The surface of the stomach is lined by simple cylindrical epithelium that extends and overlies the gastric foveola (superficial tubular epithelial invagination).
