Formative
Definition: A formative assessment is used to gather data from students and monitor or adjust instruction. This type of assessment has little to no grading value and is mainly used to provide feedback to the teacher.
Circle The Picture Pass- Students will be required to circle the picture that answers one question asked about a story that was just read to them before moving on.
Draw It Activity- Students will be asked to draw a picture of what happened at a certain point in the story.
Interim/Benchmark
Definition: Benchmark assessments are tests that check for student understanding at certain points in a unit. These assessments make sure students are on track to master the content.
District Assessment- These assessments are taken by students at certain points throughout the unit. The student is required to show what they have learned so far, and the teacher uses this to determine if students are on track.
Spelling Test- Students are required to show spelling knowledge at certain points throughout the year, and the teacher can use this data to confirm students are where they need to be.
Summative
Definition: A summative assessment is used to determine student mastery at the end of a unit. These assessments are weighted highly in student grades.
End Of Unit Test- Assessment that is given at the end of the unit to determine cumulative knowledge the student has on material.
Final Paper Report- A paper or essay that the student writes at the end of a unit to reflect learning over a period of time, or a unit.
Performance
Definition: A performance assessment requires a student to perform a task. These assessments general assignments like answering questions on a paper.
Experiment- Students will be required to complete an experiment with a group that is related to the content.
Write A Poem- Students will be required to create a poem (acrostic, haiku, etc.) that relates to the material.
Diagnostic
Definition: Diagnostic assessments are tests given to students to identify strengths and areas where support will be needed in future lessons. Using these tests to gather student data will help teachers meet specific student needs.
Code Knowledge Diagnostic Assessments- These assessments are done at the beginning of the year in 1st grade to determine what level students are at with recognizing letter sounds.
iStation- This is an online assessment that is used to gather student data and show teachers where their students level at the beginning of the school year before learning.
