Writing Short Stories
Themes
Can be detailed, but usually only features 1 major theme as opposed to the variety in other novels
-
Structure
Start "in medias res," or in the middle of the story, to quicken the pace and get to more important events quicker
Same variety as regular stories, but pace is significantly quicker
-
Helpful to end with an element of uncertainty if it becomes hard to come up with a ending that ties all the plot points together, but this should be used cautionly in order to not make the ending seem unsatisfying
-
Outlining and Creating
Good to start from basic ideas, and develop stories from there
Outlining is essential to how quick one writes their stories, and helps with how connected it seems
Ideas can come from life experience, interests, or just random words
Start from a basic statement (theme,) and develop your plot/concepts from there
Short Story Collections
