Problems of 1918-1922
28th June 1919 - The signing of the Treaty of Versailles
- It greatly weakened the new government
- A powerful myth developed which said that the army had been 'stabbed in the back' by weak politicians
- Treaty became a symbol of humiliation and defeat
- The terms were seen as vindictive (Territory loss, Reparations, Armament restrictions, War guilt clause, Forbidden from the LON)
- The Weimar Republic was blamed for the Treaty because they signed it
1919 - The Spartacist uprising
Politics: Communists, extreme left wing
Leaders: Karl Liebnecht and Rosa Luxemburg
Aims: To overthrow the Weimar Republic and create a communist Government in Germany
Their Actions: Took control over government headquarters but nothing else (terribly planned)
What happened: the Weimar Government used Freikorps to defeat them. They murdered the leaders and crushed the uprising.
1920 - The Kapp Putsch
Politics: Freikorps, extreme right wing
Leaders: Wolfgang kapp (Freikorp commander)
Aims: TO overthrow the Weimar Republic and create a military right wing dictatorship
Their actions: Marched into Berlin and took it over. Ebert and the government were forced to run away. Kapp declared a new right wing government
What happened: Ebert appealed to the ordinary workers for help and they went on a strike. The strike was so successful that Kapp had to pull out of Berlin within days
